Nine greater Lansing communities are partnering with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan in the 2014 Winter Warm-Up Blues Community Challenge, starting Jan. 18.  The free, eight-week challenge, supported by Community Partners in Health, encourages local residents of all ages to commit to improve their health by living an active lifestyle.

More than 2,100 participants from Charlotte, Delhi Township, Delta Township, East Lansing, Grand Ledge, Lansing, Lansing Township, St. Johns and Williamston competed in the 2013 challenge, logging over 113,000 miles of exercise, an accomplishment the returning municipalities are looking to surpass this year. BCBSM will award grants to all participating teams, including larger grants for the three communities with the most logged miles. The grants will be used to support public health and wellness investments in each community.

Participants in the 2014 Winter Warm-Up Blues Community Challenge will compete in teams by logging minutes or miles of exercise through the online WalkingWorks™ program to determine which team tracks the most activity through the duration of the challenge.  For the first time, BCBSM will award additional grants for the team with the largest percentage of activity increase and largest increase in team participation. Both metrics will be compared with 2013 program statistics.

To register for the Blues Community Challenge or learn more about the program, community members are welcome to attend the Winter Warm-Up Kick-Off event on Saturday, Jan. 18 from 10 a.m. – noon in the Macy’s Wing of the Lansing Mall in Lansing.  The event will include onsite registration for the Blues Community Challenge, as well as health screenings, kids’ games, health and Affordable Care Act information and Choosing Health! community resource displays.  Those interested in participating in the Blues Community Challenge can also enroll in the competition at WalkingWorks.com or on-site at any of the weekly events during the eight-week challenge.
