Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan isn’t just the largest health insurance provider in the state, it’s also a huge employer. In fact, BCBSM has around 7,000 employees who work in fields as unique as accounting, HR and marketing. Whether you are business-minded and love crunching numbers or you’re a people person who wants to take care of those who need help, BCBSM provides unique career opportunities that suit your strengths. These two positions will give you an idea of how wide-ranging the opportunities are at BCBSM. Position: Chronic Conditions Case Manager What it is: All case managers use their nursing knowledge to educate members. And those who work in the chronic conditions program deal one-on-one with members who have chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, heat failure or asthma. Vicki Lepine, a former nurse, is now a chronic conditions case manager at BCBSM. She helps manage members’ health by ensuring they understand their condition and provides guidance on how to manage it. She also helps members accomplish their health goals, such as losing weight or quitting smoking. “I never would have imagined that an insurance company employed nurses,” she says. “Even though I’m no longer at a patient’s bedside, the job itself still requires me to use my nursing knowledge and experience to help people deal with health issues. Despite being a large company, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan feels like a small community where everyone looks out for each other. And there are so many opportunities for advancement or a career change here.” Position: Actuary What it is: The main role of the actuarial department is to offer financial guidance to ensure the stability and growth of BCBSM as a company. Their recommendations help guide many of the key decisions made within the business, including:
  • Development of new product offerings for emerging customer segments
  • Strategy and calculation rates for BCBSM administrative fees and stop-loss premiums
  • Calculation and management of Health Care Reform taxes and fees
  • Ad hoc analysis for key and large group customers
Adam Dee has worked in the actuary department at BCBSM for two years. “I viewed my move to BCBSM as a great opportunity to expand my actuarial background, particularly in light of the changes coming to the health care marketplace due to the Affordable Care Act,” he says. “Working here means I get exposure to so many different market segments and pieces of the business. After joining BCBSM it only took a short amount of time to form great relationships within my own department. I have felt welcome since day one. I do not this type of atmosphere exists at very many organizations.” If you enjoyed this post, you might be interested to know we’re hiring.
