Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network understand our members’ concern about the recent Anthem cyber attack. We deeply share this concern and are continuing to work tirelessly with Anthem to determine potential impacts on our members’ privacy and provide updates to affected members. We want to be sure our members understand:
  1. Anthem and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan are two separate companies
  2. Anthem’s system was breached, not ours, and we are actively investigating any possible impacts on our members
Upon learning of the news, we immediately convened our response team to begin determining if, and potentially how, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan members may be impacted. We take the privacy and security of our members’ information very seriously, and we continue to work with Anthem to understand possible impacts to our customers and members. We’ll communicate the facts as they become available, and take appropriate actions in the event our members’ privacy was breached. As new information is available regarding the status of the situation, we will update our corporate blog, MIBluesPerspectives.com with facts as they become known. If you have any questions or concerns we encourage you to visit www.anthemfacts.com/faq. Originally published Feb. 5, 2015. Photo Credit: Eeekster

Paula, as a current or former BCBSM or BCN member (2004 or after) your information may have been in the Anthem database if you lived in one of the 14 states in which Anthem operates or you received health care services in these states. This includes getting a prescription filled, seeing a doctor or receiving care at a hospital. If you are affected, you will be notified by letter from Anthem. If you feel you have been impacted, you do not have to wait for a letter to arrive. The quickest and easiest way to enroll in Anthem's credit monitoring service is via the online enrollment process at anthemfacts.com.

I believe that my husband and I have had our identities stolen due to this. We received a letter from the IRS a week ago indicating that a tax return had been filed in our names and if we had not filed as of yet to contact them. The way they filed the return makes us suspicious that it came from BCN because I am primary on the insurance and that is how the fraudulent return was filed and we have never filed with my name being primary. We have done all the necessary steps for identity theft at this time, however if our information was breached due to this then I want the "free" monitoring that is a part of this breach. I believe this data breach went beyond what was originally thought. Please advise.

I am sorry you were charged for accessing your credit report. The Fair Credit Reporting Act, however, requires each of the nationwide credit reporting companies – Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion – to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months. The three nationwide credit reporting companies have set up a central website and a toll-free number which you can use to order your free annual report. You can access the website at annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228. Accessing one of these options is the best way to ensure you receive your annual free credit report.

Credit reports are in fact, NOT free in every state. You should clarify that. Here in MI, $11.50, as I just attempted to purchase one from Equifax.

Hello Tom - Anthem is currently conducting an extensive IT forensic investigation to determine which members are impacted. If you are a BCBSM member and live in, or received services in, one of the 14 Anthem states (California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin), you can enroll today in two years of free credit monitoring and also have access to identity theft repair services provided by Anthem. You can access these services through anthemfacts.com. For more information, you can call Anthem’s toll-free hotline at 1-877-263-7995.
