Glowga: A New Twist on Yoga to Light Up Detroit Riverfront

What could be more relaxing than executing the cobra pose while basking in the glow of luminescent jewelry and the moon?

As part of the Live The Riverfront program, a multi-year partnership between Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and the RiverFront Conservancy, there will be two free Moonlight Yoga classes this summer at Gabriel Richard Park (located just east of the MacArthur Bridget to Belle Isle). Each class will be held at 9 p.m. and accommodate 200 participants per session.

After tickets for July 15 sold out in less than 24 hours, you’ll have to act fast to register for the second and final night of Moonlight Yoga on the Riverfront. Mark your calendar for July 29 at 10 a.m., when the Aug. 12 Moonlight Yoga tickets will be available here.

Michelle Moten, founder and program director of Urban Solace Yoga Studio, will be leading the classes through traditional yoga poses while incorporating special 16-inch lighted batons that will be provided to each participant.

If yoga isn’t your thing, come to the Riverfront anyway to enjoy the view!

Moonlight Yoga is one of many Live the Riverfront activities that encourages people to use the Detroit Riverfront to live a healthy and active lifestyle. Other components of Live the Riverfront include Walk the RiverWalk Wednesdays, weekly T’ai Chi and yoga classes, the annual Riverfront Run and the newly-opened Fit Park along the Dequindre Cut.

Live the Riverfront has allowed us to reach out to new audiences and engage them in a variety of activities along the Detroit River,” said Mark Wallace, president and CEO of the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy. “Moonlight Yoga was hugely popular last year, and there has been a lot of excitement for it already, so we’re pleased to be able to accommodate even more participants this year.”
