4 Ways Blue Cross Embraces Michigan’s Rich Cultural Diversity

Michigan is one of the most diverse states in the nation, and honoring the backgrounds and cultures of every person in the state is something Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan strives to do. That’s why Blue Cross is an active partner in diverse community organizations and events all around Michigan. In just the first few months of 2016, we’ve already supported Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities, events honoring Asian Americans and more. And we aren’t done yet: There are many opportunities this spring to join us in our support of diversity. Here are just a few of the events Blue Cross is sponsoring in the coming weeks and months:
- This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Annual Scholarship Fundraiser Dinner honoring Cesar Chavez. Each year the dinner honors the legacy of the Hispanic leader and awards scholarships to college students in Allegan, Calhoun, Kalamazoo and Van Buren counties. This year’s event will take place April 2 in Kalamazoo with distinguished Judge Cruz Reynoso, civil rights champion and the first Chicano to serve on the California Supreme Court, acting as the evening’s keynote speaker.
- The Dia de la Mujer conference, which is on April 9 in Lansing, will feature Christine Chavez, granddaughter of Cesar Chavez. This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the conference, which focuses on the furthering the education, health, politics and empowerment of Latina women.
- Every year, the Tribe-to Tribe Blues Community Challenge activates Native American communities across Michigan to get proactive about their health. This year’s challenge will begin in May, so stay tuned to this blog for additional information on how to get involved.
- The Grand Rapids Community College Diversity Lecture Series has been a way to hear Grand Rapids’ diverse voices and ideas for the past 21 years. Though some lectures have already occurred this year, upcoming speakers will talk about Latino culture, African American cuisine and transgender identity.
