Inspired by her "Hero," Blue Cross Employee Joins 2016 Heart Walk

Marisa Kuczborski is a corporate communications intern for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
Jody Kovich is one of hundreds of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan employees participating in the Metro Detroit Heart Walk this Saturday, May 14, 2016. Although it is her first year joining the event, Kovich serves as team captain for The Heartbeats.
Her interest in participating and raising awareness stems from a personal connection to heart disease. In 1952, Kovich's grandmother was one of the first females to have an open heart procedure and later passed due to congestive heart failure. Her father, a retired technical sergeant for the United States Air Force, passed away from severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Kovich says he was her hero. These events inspired her to spread awareness about heart conditions by joining the American Heart Association's Metro Detroit Heart Walk. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important to Kovich, who has been a non-smoker her entire life. She exercises regularly, eats right and always attends her yearly physicals.
