Each year, nearly 100 million Americans travel during the holiday season, some to visit their hometowns, others to go on vacation with friends and family. Whether traveling locally, out of state or overseas, it’s important to understand how health care coverage works when a member is away from home. If you’re a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan or Blue Care Network member, learn more about how two tools—the BCBSM mobile app and Global Core website—can help you do just that. ID Card It’s easy to forget to pack your insurance card when you head on a trip, but forgetting your card can make it tougher to get care. Avoid the stress and panic of not having your insurance card with the virtual ID card on the BCBSM mobile app. Just pull up the card on your phone and use it at a doctor’s office, urgent care center or pharmacy wherever you are. Find a Doctor It can be overwhelming to figure out where to get care if you’re injured or fall ill while traveling. Within the U.S., you can use Find a Doctor in the BCBSM mobile app. It helps you locate nearby doctors, clinics and hospitals so you can get the care you need when you need it. The tool also provides GPS-enabled directions to get you from point A to point B seamlessly. Find Care Now Getting really sick or, even worse, injured when traveling can send you into panic mode while you try to figure out where to go for emergency care. Under Find a Doctor in the BCBSM mobile app, select Find Care Now to help you quickly find online care, urgent care or emergency care. You can even connect to a 24-Hour Nurse Hotline for advice on the best place to go for care. My Coverage Sitting in a doctor’s office, urgent care center or emergency room while you’re traveling is not the ideal time to realize you have questions about your coverage. Select My Coverage in the BCBSM mobile app to quickly show you all the details of your medical, prescription, dental or vision coverage. Global Core Website If you’re traveling outside of the U.S., Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands, depending on your coverage, you may be able to use the Global Core Website* to find doctors and hospitals near you. The website also provides additional resources, like claims forms, destination profiles, medical translations and other information that can keep you and your loved one’s healthy and safe wherever you may go. *GlobalCore coverage varies between HMO and PPO plans. Coverage with this offering can be verified via the Global Core website or by calling the phone number on the back of your member ID card.
