DETROIT, October 25, 2017 – Forty-seven safety net clinics throughout Michigan will receive a total of $778,346 in funding through the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Strengthening the Safety Net program. The program, now in its 13th year, provides funding to clinics that offer free or low-cost medical, dental and mental health treatment for uninsured and under-insured Michigan residents. “These clinics provide valuable health care services in their communities, and we are proud to support them and expand access to quality care for individuals in need,” said Lynda Rossi, executive vice president of Strategy, Government and Public Affairs at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. “This 13-year effort continues to improve health care stability and is now expected to reach more than 74,000 patients.” Clinics that provide free or low-cost medical, dental, mental health, vision and specialty care services were invited to apply for a Strengthening the Safety Net grant in June to support operations or expand services. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is the largest, private donor to Michigan’s free clinics across the state. Since 2005, more than $13 million in grants have been given so safety net clinics can care for the uninsured and underinsured.
