Take a Chance on Getting a Visa® Gift Card, Not the Flu

Getting your flu shot can pay off in more ways than one for you this winter.

If you’re a Blue Care Network member aged 18 to 64 and received a flu shot between July 2015 and February 2016, you can enter a drawing for a chance to win a Visa® gift card. Entries must be received by March 1, 2016. Winners will be notified by phone in April.

If you haven’t gotten your shot yet, it’s not too late. Flu activity most often peaks in February or later in most seasons, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And as long as flu viruses are circulating, the CDC recommends getting the shot to protect yourself from catching flu symptoms.

Where do I get my shot?
The flu shot is a covered benefit through your Blue Care Network plan, even if you don’t have pharmacy coverage. Simply go to your local participating pharmacy or your doctor’s office to get one. Copayments may apply if you see your doctor for any reason other than the flu shot.

If you head to your local pharmacy, you’ll want to:

  1. Contact your pharmacy to see if it provides flu shots on-site.
  2. Ask if it participates with BCN.
  3. If so, take your BCN ID card with you to the pharmacy.

Do I need to see my doctor for a referral?
No. However, tell your doctor if you get a flu shot from another source. You’ll also want to let him or her know the date of your flu shot, so they can properly keep track of your medical records.

Who should get vaccinated?
According to the CDC, everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine every season. The flu shot is especially important for people who have chronic health conditions such as asthma or congestive heart failure. Here’s a full list of people who are at high risk of developing flu-related complications.

I’ve gotten my flu shot, but how can I protect myself from others spreading similar germs to me?
While the flu shot is your best protection against the flu, the CDC provides a list of healthy habits that can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses such as the flu.

*While Blue Care Network highly encourages you to get your annual flu shot, it’s not required to enter the drawing. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and BCN employees, spouses and dependents are not eligible for this drawing.
