Northern Michigan residents and tourists alike can cruise through Petoskey State Park this summer with newly-available bike rentals.
Starting June 18, 14 new bicycles will be available to the public to rent at the Petoskey State Park’s Campground Office thanks to the Healthy Recreation Catalyst Awards, a grant program dedicated to funding projects that enhance outdoor recreation opportunities for children, families and older adults.
The Petoskey State Park’s new bicycles offer both locals and tourists the convenience of enjoying miles of trails without the trouble of bringing their own bicycles. The program encourages new and experienced bikers to ride the trails that extend along Lake Michigan. The two major pathways available to riders are the Little Traverse Wheelway and the North Western State Trail. The Little Traverse Wheelway, a scenic trail that runs through the state park, spans 23 miles between Charlevoix and Harbor Springs. The North Western State trail is a 32-mile picturesque path that connects Petoskey and Mackinaw.
Suzanne Miller Allen, director of Community Responsibility at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, comments, “Petoskey State Park houses beautiful biking trails. These rentals give residents and tourists the opportunity to take advantage of the park’s outdoor amenities and get active. Blue Cross is proud to be part of a program that makes such worthwhile community projects possible.”
The Petoskey State Park bike rental program and the Healthy Recreation Catalyst Award are part of Blue Cross’ MI Big Green Gym program, which is a partnership among Blue Cross, the Michigan Recreation and Park Association (mParks), and the Department of Natural Resources. The program promotes Michigan’s parks and recreation areas as places to get active and stay healthy.
Whether you are out for a leisurely stroll or ready to conquer over 50 miles of Michigan’s most scenic paths, anyone can take advantage of this fun opportunity to stay active with friends and family.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is a sponsor of the Petoskey State Park bike rental program. The bike rental program is available to any member of mParks.
