The 26th annual Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive will take place Saturday, May 12, and Blue Cross employees across Michigan are once again joining in the effort to collect non-perishable food items for local families in need.
To join Blue Cross in supporting the Stamp Out Hunger food drive, simply place a bag of non-perishable food items by your mailbox on the morning of Saturday, May 12, 2018.
Items collected by Blue Cross employees will be distributed to local Michigan agencies including:
  • Feeding America in Grand Rapids
  • The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan
  • The Greater Lansing Food Bank
  • Gleaner's Community Food Bank
  • Northwest Michigan Food Coalition
Joe Wald, executive director of the Greater Lansing Food Bank, says the donations come at a critical time for the organization. “By May, our donations from the winter holidays have been distributed, and we see a huge spike in need as children are let out for summer recess," said Wald. "The donations from this drive provide food for area families in need in our community.” Touted as the largest single-day food drive in America, the NALC reports last year's efforts brought in more than 75 million pounds of food for local agencies. In addition to providing critical food resources, the event raises awareness of hunger and food insecurity across America and here in Michigan. “This food drive is a huge event that draws much attention to the plight of many individuals who need and deserve the contributions of food this event brings forth," said Lee Ward, human resources manager for the United States Postal Service Detroit district. Organizers are encouraging the public to share photos and updates about their support of the food drive using #StampOutHunger on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
