Blue Cross Earns Perfect Score on Disability Equality Index

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is once again being recognized for promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace.

For the fourth year in a row, Blue Cross has earned a perfect score – 100 points – on the Disability Equality Index. The index is a joint initiative of Disability:IN and the American Association of People with Disabilities. It serves as a national benchmarking tool, scoring businesses on a scale of zero to 100 on their disability inclusion policies and practices.

“As we know, disability is one facet of diversity and Blue Cross is a leader in promoting a culture of inclusion for people with disabilities,” said Bridget Hurd, senior director, Diversity and Inclusion. “As a result of policies, programs and practices in HR, Facilities and Diversity and Inclusion, we have scored 100 out of 100 points the last four consecutive years – 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. Being recognized and respected for our efforts by national organizations is evidence that we are on the right track as a company.”

Here are some of the things the company has done to earn this recognition:

  • Best practices in policies and programs as it relates to benefits, recruitment, retention and advancement and accommodation.
  • The BrightBlue employee resource network, which has a mission to educate, promote and facilitate a complete and seamless integration into the BCBSM workforce and the community at large for individuals with diverse skill-sets and capabilities.
  • The BluePaths intern program for college students with disabilities.
