Blue Cross celebrates Walk@Lunch Day in Grand Rapids

Last week, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan members and employees walked together to promote a healthier, more active lifestyle in celebration of Blue Cross' Walk@Lunch Day. Studies have shown that the long-term and short-term benefits of a brisk 20-30 minute walk are nearly endless. Walking can improve personal wellness, prevent short-term and long-term complications, and lower costs of healthcare for employers and employees over time. Participants walked a 1.4 mile route through the heart of downtown Grand Rapids and along the scenic Grand River. Blue Cross walkers enjoyed getting a midday break to breathe in the fresh air and catch up outside of the office. Here are a few tips for getting started with walking at lunch time:
  • Grab a walking buddy and set aside 20-30 minutes at lunchtime to out of your seat together.
  • Map out a route around the block or just inside around the office.
  • If you are not used to walking, start at a slower pace with a shorter route and work your way to your goal.
  • Walk with a partner, observe traffic signs, wear sunscreen and sun glasses, and stay hydrated before, during, and after the walk.
