Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is once again being recognized for promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace. For the fifth year in a row, Blue Cross has earned a perfect score – 100 points – on the Disability Equality Index. The index is a joint initiative of Disability:IN and the American Association of People with Disabilities. It serves as a national benchmarking tool, scoring businesses on a scale of zero to 100 on their disability inclusion policies and practices. “As we know, disability is one facet of diversity and Blue Cross is a leader in promoting a culture of inclusion for people with disabilities,” said Bridget Hurd, vice president, Inclusion and Diversity. “As a result of policies, programs and practices in HR, Facilities and Diversity and Inclusion, we have scored 100 out of 100 points the last five consecutive years – 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. Being recognized and respected for our efforts by national organizations is evidence that we are on the right track as a company.” Here are some of the things the company has done to earn this recognition:
- Best practices in policies and programs as it relates to benefits, recruitment, retention and advancement and accommodation.
- The BrightBlue employee resource network, which has a mission to educate, promote and facilitate a complete and seamless integration into the BCBSM workforce and the community at large for individuals with diverse skill-sets and capabilities.
- The BluePaths intern program for college students with disabilities.
Blue Cross is joined by business representing several industries, such as Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Facebook, Google, Meijer, Pfizerand six other Blue plans. In 2021, out of 319 participants in the Disability Equality Index, 191 companies received a score of 100; 58 companies received a score of 90 and 23 companies received a score of 80. “While it’s wonderful to be recognized in the company of such well-respected international businesses, it’s the results that really make us smile. The actions taken over the past few years have led to an increase in the number of people with disabilities hired which has a positive impact on our customers and ultimately the bottom line,” said Libbie Ward, manager, Talent Acquisition.
