Come one, come all to the free Summer Trail Series 5K walk and runs taking place on June 20, July 26 and August 24. These three free 5Ks are part of the MI Big Green Gym program, which was started in 2013 by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association (mParks). The initiative was created to encourage people to use the state’s outdoor green spaces to be active and healthy. Regardless of the location, everywhere in Michigan is no more than 30 minutes away from a state park, forest, campground or trail system. To register, visit the Summer Trails Series website. Those interested in registering for more than one of the events, must register for each event separately. The registration for each location will open approximately three weeks prior to the event, but early registration is recommended, as last year’s events did sell out. Guaranteed entry for each 5K can be purchased with a $20 donation. This option is limited to the first 200 registrants or when the event sells out. Event Dates
  • Tuesday, June 20 at Dewitt High School
  • Wednesday, July 26 at Lake Lansing Park North
  • Thursday, August 24 at Sleepy Hollow State Park
Registrants for the 5K at Sleepy Hollow State Park must have a Recreation Passport to enter the park. Participants without a Recreation Passport can purchase one at a state park before the event or the day of. At just $11, the Recreation Passport allows holders to explore Michigan’s entire great outdoors with access to more than 100 state parks and recreation areas, as well as help support and protect trails and waterways. The Summer Trail Series is sponsored by the Playmakers Fitness Foundation, mParks, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and the DNR. Snacks and fruit will be provided by Meijer and baked goods will be provided by Breadsmith. Enjoy Michigan’s parks by registering here.
