Did you know that black men as a group have the lowest life expectancy and highest death rate of every population group in the United States? There are many reasons for these disparities, one being a lack of access to health care. To combat that reality, 100 Black Men of Greater Detroit and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan are partnering with the Arise! Detroit Neighborhoods Day initiative to present the sixth annual Man Up! for Better Health event, which features preventive health screenings and family-friendly activities including a community run/walk. The event is free and open to the public and takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4 at the Historic People’s Community Church. As one of hundreds of community projects taking place that day, Man Up! attendees can start the day with a community walk or run through beautiful mid-town Detroit. Throughout the day, there will be opportunities to enjoy refreshments, participate in raffles and win prizes – all while learning valuable health and wellness information and receiving free on-site health screenings. Blood pressure, stroke risk assessment, hypertension screening and dental care screening are just some of the available services at the event. Families are welcome to attend together. There’s plenty of entertainment and activities for all, including fitness demonstrations, cooking and nutrition education, celebrity guests and children’s activities. So, grab your family and friends and Man Up! for Health with us this Saturday. There’s nothing to lose by taking advantage of free preventive care and plenty of life to gain.
