Know a school that deserves to be recognized for making strides toward a healthier environment? Applications are now open for the 2016 Michigan School Wellness Award. For the last decade, the Michigan School Wellness Awards have recognized healthy elementary, middle and high schools all over the state of Michigan. Schools are selected based on demonstrated policy and environmental improvements in the form of healthy eating, physical activity and tobacco-free lifestyles. There are multiple levels of the 2016 School Wellness Award Requirements, ranging from first place, Gold Level to Honorable Mention. All award levels have a range of requirements that must be met or exceeded in order to be considered for the award. To learn more about the award and apply, visit mihealthtools.org/greatschools. The School Wellness Award is sponsored by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership with the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Michigan Action for Healthy Kids, Michigan Department of Education, Michigan's Health and Wellness Education Workgroup, and United Dairy Industry of Michigan. This is another demonstration of Blue Cross' commitment to Michigan’s youth, complementing our support of the Building Healthy Communities programBuilding Healthy Communities, originally created by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan in 2009, is an evidence-based, comprehensive, school-wide initiative that supports children’s health by providing students, teachers and administrators with tools and resources to improve student health while creating a healthier school environment. Schools looking to get involved in the Building Healthy Communities program can visit bcbsm.com/buildhealth to learn more.
