Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan ensures that “confidence comes with every card,” and that confidence starts with a friendly, knowledgeable team that includes military veterans. Blue Cross is one of just 21 employers in Michigan certified by the Michigan Veterans’ Affairs Agency for their diligence in hiring veterans. This focus on employing former armed services personnel isn’t just a way to expand the company’s workforce, it’s a way to ensure that our nation’s heroes “wear blue.” As a Bronze Level Certified Veteran-Friendly Employer, Blue Cross invests in efforts to help veterans transition to civilian life after their service. That means building and growing initiatives, including helping veterans seek out jobs with the help of Talent 2025, a non-profit organization based in West Michigan that guides veterans into unique employment solutions. Combined efforts range from holding workshops for resume writing to helping military paramedics get on the fast-track to EMS licensure. As a part of this initiative, Blue Cross is also increasing the number of veterans they hire. Jody Guastella Jones, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s talent acquisition and diversity recruiting representative, says that earning this designation means a larger push for the company to hire, retain and promote veteran talent. To achieve Silver Level recognition, Blue Cross is seeking to establish new initiatives, like internships or on-the-job training programs, in addition to continuing their existing ones. The next step, Gold Level recognition, will be earned when, beyond continuing all pre-existing efforts, Blue Cross has a 75 percent retention of veterans hired through the program. To keep these designations, Blue Cross will also continuously work to determine new goals for veteran hiring within the company. “Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is proud to embrace employees with a history of military service and wants to attract more vets to our jobs,” Jones says. Just as members of the U.S. military work as a team rather than individuals, Blue Cross knows that as a company, it’s stronger as a team.
