Unfortunately for Michigan’s kids, today’s generation of children runs the greatest risk of growing up with chronic disease. A lack of healthy physical activities is just one of the factors leading to increased childhood obesity in our state. Obesity leads to higher medical expenses and a rise in the cost of health insurance. Both put additional strain on family budgets. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is committed to the health and wellness of people throughout the state of Michigan. Over the last 10 years, BCBSM has put a concentrated focus on children’s health – because of the alarming trend of obesity among kids and because early interventions with children have the best chance to yield a healthier adult population as kids grow up. As a non-profit for 77 years, our mission has been to lead efforts to make Michigan a healthier place. Our success in these endeavors is due in large measure to the organizations with which we partner. One of our strongest community partnerships is with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan. In a recent podcast, Andy Hetzel, vice president of Corporate Communications, shares his insight and perspective into BCBSM’s partnership with this organization.
