DETROIT, March 23, 2020 – Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network of Michigan will continue critical operations during the Stay Home Stay Safe executive order issued today by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The company deems its claims processing, payment services and customer services essential to protect the lives of Michigan residents and keep the health care system functioning during the COVID-19 crisis. The company’s claims payment systems, telephone servicing capabilities for customers and providers, and other functions critical to the continued functioning of Michigan’s health care system will require some BCBSM employees to continue to report to work on site in its facilities. The company is implementing longstanding business continuity plans that govern operations in the event of a crisis and will be advising mission-critical employees of their next steps. “Blue Cross pays an average of $72 million per day for our members’ care, and these dollars flow through Michigan’s health care system to keep critical services in hospitals, physician offices and pharmacies operating,” said Daniel J. Loepp, BCBSM President and CEO. “Our mission is critical, and our employees providing critical services have my gratitude for stepping up to serve our state during this public health crisis.” “We respect the Governor’s proactive leadership in making some difficult decisions, like the Stay Home Stay Safe order, that will disrupt our daily routines,” Loepp said. “But her decision will have a significant positive impact on the health of our population overall and bring this crisis to an end more quickly than otherwise.” Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, a nonprofit mutual insurance company, is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
