On Saturday, March 8, 2014, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan celebrated our 75th year of being a nonprofit health insurer. As BCBSM president and CEO, Daniel J. Loepp said in a press release about the day, we’re not acting our age by any means. “We’re a modern, dynamic company prepared to serve and guide our stakeholders as health care transforms under the Affordable Care Act. Our stakeholders benefit from Blue Cross’ experience and strong Michigan roots – given our deep relationships with doctors and hospitals across the state, and our history of engagement within Michigan’s diverse communities,” says Loepp. Continuing that tradition of working with doctors and hospitals continues through our Value Partnerships initiatives, which have improved patient outcomes while helping reduce the cost of care. This tradition has also manifested itself in the largest Patient-Centered Medical Home program in the nation, made possible by working in collaboration with our partner doctors and hospitals. Part of our history with serving Michigan’s diverse communities starts with our commitment to being the only insurer providing health care access to people in each of Michigan’s 83 counties. So is investing in the health of Michigan’s children, something we’ve done through our Building Healthy Communities program. Since 2005, our Strengthening the Safety Net program has provided nearly $8 million in grants to free and low-cost health clinics throughout the state, to ensure our state’s uninsured residents have access to quality care. And while our business has transitioned to a nonprofit mutual, our commitment to the health of Michigan residents has not changed, as we committed to providing $1.56 billion over the next 18 years to the Michigan Health Endowment. Our commitment to the health of Michigan extends to reinvigorating our core cities as well. Starting with the restoration of the Steketee’s building in Grand Rapids and the conversion of a former Lansing Board of Water and Light power plant into the headquarters for Accident Fund Holdings, we have located thousands of our employees in the heart of our state’s major cities. This culminated in 2011, with unifying our Detroit campus and boosting the number of Blues employees working downtown to more than 6,000 people. Ensuring people throughout Michigan have access to health care, facilitating improvements in health care quality, protecting the vulnerable in our communities, investing in children’s health and working to reinvigorate Michigan’s core cities provides a strong foundation for our company. It is a foundation that confirms this vibrant 75 year-old has a bright future serving the Great Lake State.
