There is no doubt that Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is fully committed to diversity and inclusion, and a recent honor shows that dedication isn’t going unnoticed. Blue Cross was recently named the 2017 recipient of the Distinguished Corporate Citizen Award by the Michigan Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. Bridget G. Hurd, senior director of diversity and inclusion for Blue Cross, accepted the award in Washington, D.C., on Friday, September 22. “Blue Cross is proud to accept this distinguished honor,” said Hurd. “We constantly prioritize diversity and inclusion throughout our organization—from the suppliers we use to our employee engagement and management team—and this award shows we are on the right path.” The award reception is held annually during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Legislative Conference, and the primary cause is to highlight the diversity, strength and influence of Michigan's dynamic congressional delegation. It was attended by Michigan’s Congressional Black Caucus members U.S. Congressman John Conyers, Jr. and U.S. Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence. U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters were also guests. In addition to the Distinguished Corporate Citizen Award, Blue Cross has been honored with other diversity and inclusion awards. These include:
  • Diversity MBA Magazine’s Top 10 Best in Class for Board Diversity (2015, 2016) and top 10 Best in Class for Workplace Inclusion (2013, 2015)
  • DiversityInc’s Top 10 Regional Companies List from 2011 through 2016 (Blue Cross was #1 in 2015 and 2016)
  • Great Lakes Women's Business Council’s Excellence in Supplier Diversity, Best in Class (2016)
