The pandemic caused many of us – especially men – to put off annual health and wellness screenings. But these important preventative measures can detect health problems early – and shouldn’t be delayed any longer. Free health screenings, tests and vaccines will be available to men age 18 years old and older at the 11th Annual Men’s Health Event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at Ford Field in Detroit. Hosted by the MIU Men’s Health Foundation, the event is open to men with or without insurance.
A nurse checks a man's blood pressure at a previous Men's Health Event. “Far too many men delayed or skipped routine health checkups during the pandemic, which can be critical to saving lives,” said Dr. Michael Lutz, president and founder of the MIU Men’s Health Foundation and a urologist with the Michigan Institute of Urology. “This is a great opportunity to regain or take control of your health and kick off a healthier lifestyle for those who may have been ignoring it. We have the most in-depth blood screening panel available at a free health event.”  At the Men’s Health Event men will have access to free health and wellness screenings valued at $2,000, including the following:
  • COVID-19 testing and vaccines
  • Dental and vision screening
  • Diabetes testing
  • EKGs
  • Eye exams
  • Flu shots
  • Hearing tests
  • Hepatitis A vaccines
  • HIV testing
  • In-depth bloodwork for prostate-specific antigen, testosterone, cholesterol, glucose and more
  • Mental health evaluations
  • Screenings for skin, prostate, colon and oral cancer
  • Vital screenings
Free lunch and live music will also be available, as well as employment assistance, education assistance and fitness activities. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Cross Complete are among the sponsors of the event, which has provided nearly 75,000 health screenings since the event began in 2011.  Registration for the free event is encouraged by texting MHE2021 to (313) 217-3328, or online by visiting TheMensHealthEvent.com. Learn more by visiting TheMensHealthEvent.com.
